WOMAD 2005 ON RADIO 3
Friday 29th July: 9.45pm - 11.30pm

Andrew McGregor is joined by Lucy Duran to start off a weekend of broadcasts from the globe's leading festival of world music on the banks of the River Thames in Reading. Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation perform live, and there are highlights from the Renegades Steel Orchestra from Trinidad, Les Yeux Noirs from France and the Bajofondo Tango Club from Argentina. There is also an acoustic set from Syrian qanun virtuoso Abdullah Chhadeh from the Radio 3 Village Stage.

Saturday 30th July: 1pm - 2.30pm

Lucy Duran presents a special edition of World Routes from the WOMAD Festival at Rivermead in Reading. With live music by Lura from Cape Verde, Adel Salameh from Palestine, and a set recorded last night by the legendary Ethiopian Mahmoud Ahmed.

Saturday 30th July: 11.30pm - 1am

Late-night live sets and recorded highlights introduced by Andrew McGregor with Lucy Duran. Senegalese superstar Youssou N'Dour with Le Super Etoile de Dakar are live from the Open Air stage, and Tuvan throat singers Huun-Huur-Tu end the night in the Siam Tent. In between are Jaojoby from Madagascar, Akim El Sikameya from Algeria and Russian 'new-folk' band the Terem Quartet. Also Fiona Talkington introduces Chinese quqin player Zeng Chengwei live from the Radio 3 Village Stage.

Sunday 31st July: 22.15-00.00

Andy presents the show from the Radio 3 mobile studio at WOMAD. With music from the blind Malian duo Amadou & Mariam, Iraqi legend Ilham Al Madfai, and Sufi singers Rizwan Qawwali. Plus a live appearance by the singer-songwriter Richie Havens, and on the Radio 3 Village stage the Ugandan Geoffrey Oryema.

Saturday 6th August: 3pm - 4pm

Recorded at last weekend's WOMAD world music festival in Reading, a performance by Farida and the Iraqi Maqam Ensemble. Iraq has one of the richest of Arab classical music traditions, and Farida, a graduate of the Baghdad Music Institute, is acclaimed as one of its leading exponents. Introduced by Lucy Duran.
