'Chocky' Devon UK
Saw them last night in Exeter, Devon. Amateurish guitar plyers in fancy dress. No traditional Moroccan instruments. Repetetive lyrics with no explanation of what it was all about - we left halfway through the gig - disappointed - so what's all the fuss about?

I saw them last Monday in the Milkyway in Amsterdam. It was great, what a sound. The blues line a sort of trance rhythm, perfect. Only I think one of the lead singer, Ibrahim, had a very good time in Amsterdam (!!!) during the hours before the consert because during the consert he was very lazy.

Ali Farka Toure, Issa Baggayogo, other musical artists too numerous to mention, and now Tinariwen. Is there any end to the music talent of Mali? What is it about this African country?

Tinariwen is super!
Ola Aluko Newjersey
Thank for the evolution of identity
and consiousnes that roar in the heart of Tinariwen, The tamasheq, the great people of sahara and north african tribe. Who were oppressed by arab invader. The Ancient music of our people. Keep on going Tinariwen.

Very good - thanks, Tinariwen!

Meghna, Houston
amazing music! Heard them at the International Festival that is held every year in Houston. The music has its own voice and speaks about life.
Nina Wikman Finland
´Cures every desease!´Cried blood when I couldn´t attend the gig in Helsinki summer 2005 - lucky there´s the internet + music shops.

I stumbled upon the music of Tinariwen on the internet. I can't stop playing their music. Its the definition of the word hypnotic.
D. Dailey, Brooklyn, NY
Lovely... glad to discover this unique talented group. Missed their performance @ Joe's Pub in NYC but look forward to seeing them in the future.
Chris, Toronto
Just saw them here in Toronto this past weekend. absolutely mesmerizing. Like ancient Saharan music fused with Delta Blues, the Velvet Underground, psych rock...astonishing!
Sylvia Mitchell, London
Moving and original performance recently on Jools Holland's television programme of African music. Will we get a chance to see them live in the UK in 2005/6 ?
Ali, Milton Keynes
Stunning!
I am into World music but this is really something. I wish I could do the same with blues and mystic Iranian music.

Sue, Cramlington
Truly awesome experience at The Sage 21 Feb 05 - I'll never forget their hypnotic sounds - a real treat and I'm still mesmerised suffiently to buy Amassakoul today. Tinariwen welcomed me to the desert and blow me away ....

"Mesmeric,hypnotic,psycodelic Arabs.Where did i put my camel.
peter from crookham"
Tinariwen is not "arab". They are Kel tamasheq, imazighen, the free indigenous non-arab people of north africa and the sahara whose culture, language and history was almost wiped out by the dominant arab-islamic homogeny in that region. Other than that, they're amazing!!!!
Dave Schuldt, Seattle WA USA
They were reviewed on National Public Radio, got the CD 2 days later. Money well spent.
Robert in Palm Springs, California
I didn't see the band when they were in the USA 'cause I just learned of them this past week. I missed them by a couple of weeks - I'm crushed!
I hope they return someday. I love this band!
Bruce Mackenzie, Lewes
Saw them on TV last night. Absolutely fantastic. You can almost feel the shimmering heat of the desert. Wonderful stuff.
Sara, Washington, DC
Saw Tinariwen this past Saturday during their first US tour. Very impressed with the ancient purity of their music despite the modern inclusion of electric and bass guitars. Look forward to seeing the number of female vocals and percussion instructments possibly increase. This is an experience you don't want to miss!
Kerry supporter
The way they dress...it's so neat.
And I like that there are no white people.
It's best when that young lady does that "YAYAYAYAYAYAYA!" thing !
That always makes my skin...like....it's like insects crawling-all-over-my-body heebie-jeebies !
But I like it though because it tickles.
Vivienne, U.S.
As a transplanted Scot living in the U.S. the opportunity to experience Tinariwen in both Washington DC and the Festival in the Desert leaves me in awe at these desert nomads and their creativity in communicating their stories to touch each of us.
Gianluca Toriccili(Bloomington,Minnesota-USA)
Well they are coming to the US soon, so i'll be there 4 them and i will see 'em finaly face 2 face, so i will enjoy them a lot as i do 4 their Music.

Tinariwen at WOMAD. Just wonderful.
Looking forward to see them again.

Can someone inform me which CD the short song before Chet Boghassa is from?
Jeff, Liverpool, UK
This band sucked, what's all the fuss about? You don't play well just because you dress up and dance around a bit. Boring mush.
outaspaceman bognor regis
if that was a dull gig their good nights must be something else!! I havn't heard anything this moving since first hearing John Lee Hooker 30 years ago... they've got sand in their joints...
Dave Leicester
Menacing and completely hypnotic I was swept away in a sandstorm of Saharan Blues, what a wonderfull sound.
Mick Coleman
Agree with some of the other comments about the band seeming tired. I saw them a couple of months ago in Fiddlers in Bristol and they blew the roof off the place. Enjoyed their set at Womad but the edge wasn't there. Shame because they are a phenomenal live band
Rob - Crawley Sussex
They were fantastic - strangely bluesy - wonderfully taught - they rocked the Siam tent - the holes in the music are a lesson to the "wall of sound" brigade.
:-)
john mac manus. Suffolk
Tinariwen were tired after too much touring. The performance was a subdued one. The only way to see this band is in a club where you get great atmosphere and a better sound. They need a few months back in Mali resting.
Claire Johnson, Cambridge
By the end of the workshop, I was in tears. It was a very moving experience to see them play live again, and all my happy memories of this year's Festival in the Desert came floodng back.
Des, Bristol
These guys were the business, pure rock and roll and so much more.
peter from crookham
Mesmeric,hypnotic,psycodelic Arabs.Where did i put my camel.
Jill - Derbyshire
I was disappointed with their performance - am I right or was it me being a bit too tired. I think Tinariwen let rip much more when they were on the village stage two years ago.
Mike Grenville, Forest Row, UK
Has to be the highlight of the festival this year. Hypnotic camel driving music. Their workshop explained the background to their music and how it has been used to communicate new ideas to a population rebuilding itself for the 21st century.
Matthew Farrand
I saw Tinariwen on BBC Four on Saturday and they were magnificent.
My only regret is that I wasn't at WOMAD in person.
Mike Bennett Swindon Wilts
I watch Tinariwen on BBC on Saturday night (24.07.04)and this band is awesome and could teach other live acts how to put on a concert.
John Boocock Scotland
Brains Blown Completely (BBC) by last night's TV performance. Any chance it will be repreated soon?
Bashe, Nakuru
If its Tinariwen who play those slamming guitars then they impressed me so much. Where can I buy their CD.
Rob Scott-Buccleuch Carlisle
Thanks BBC 4 for showing Tinariwen at WOMAD - excellent. We went to Kendal to see them earlier in the year and they really are a suberb live band.
Readers - if you get the chance then go and see them and get ready to dance along.
Aubrey, London
Having enjoyed all their work to date, I was so pleased to see the obvious happiness that each of the group take from performing their music. The memory of finally being able to see them play will stay with me for a long time.
sarah cornwall
looking forward to this performance after being blown away by their contribution on the fesival in the desert cd...should be stirring stuff.
