ENZO AVITABILE & BOTTARI (ITALY)

In the medieval haciendas and homesteads of southern Italy, farmers used to beat barrels to exorcise evil spirits from their barns and cellars. As so often happens, this very practical exercise turned into a ritual and eventually into a distinct musical culture, with entire villages turning out to chase spirits away from their fields, lead by a beat master or capopattuglia .

Think of a Mediterranean equivalent to the Drummers of Burundi, with a little of The Ghostbusters mixed in. This ancient tradition has been kept alive in one particular southern Italian village called Portico, with young disciples learning the rhythms from the old Bottari or barrel beaters. It was to Portico that Enzo Avitabile, a Neapolitan musician of some fame in Italy who has previously worked with James Brown, Tina Turner and Randy Crawford amongst others, turned for a trip back to his roots. He worked with the Bottari of Portico for three long years, incorporating their primal barrel rhythms into a hi-energy mix which included jazz, blues, the voices of the Brotherhood of the SS Crucifix and an ancient southern Italian vocal styles called canto a fronna .

Word of this intriguing project soon got out and artists like Khaled, Amina, Hugh Massakela and Manu Dibango all begged Enzo to be allowed to contribute. It's certainly one of the most unexpected and entrancing global music adventures of 2004. A CD is out now on Wrasse Records.

"Incredible, Enzo and the Bottari have played, struck and sung for two hours without a minute of rest. The antichi, magical rhythms and sweeping, take to you and they transport to you lontano.C' have promises their return to september 2007, still here to Los Angeles and Saint Pedro, California."

Love this music. Has this particular gig been recorded onto CD? Heard Enzo live in Italy this summer and it was terrific.

Bravo Enzo! I'm an Italo-American who recently returned from one month in Italy visiting friends and family. I was very disappointed in hearing so much American music throughtout Italy. I came home and caught Enzo Avitabile on the radio very late at night. I was amazed, initially the rhythms forced me to stop and listen, then I realized I actually understood his fantastic neapolitan. I am now searching to buy his music and share with friends and family. When is he coming to NY??? Bravo Enzo! Anna Greco-NY

Anne Dublin
I say them in Dublin in 2006, they have a great sound!! You have to see them ...

Attila from Budapest
I usually listen hip-hop but on 11th of august Enzo Avitabile & Bottari on the SZIGET festival World Music Stage made me happy. A lot of nations of Europe dancing and jumping and enjoying with each other. It was great. The only thing that i felt was the pulse of the music, the energy from the rhyme of the drums. thanx for that night Mr. ENZO AVITABILE & BOTTARI and of course to Mr. Manu Dibango! Lots of love.

When I've heard Enzo Avitabile's music for the first time I was surprised by the change of his sound...His music is the better way to understand where we come from...Tradition is our identity. Thank you Enzo for showing us our past....

Enzo - Salerno
I know Enzo since he was playing in a "kind of" James Brown's music. He's really unique. He hates musical commerce compromises. He plays like no other. Go to one of his concerts, and try not to move!!! Feel his vibes and tell me.

Pietro f. from Caserta

Luigi, Toulouse, France

Well, I'm biased, being originally from Caserta how can I not love Enzo, he's the man! What more can I add ... you guys have said it all!!!

Antonio, Salerno IT
I bought the cd yesterday and it's really really great. fantastic rithmes, stunning partners and, most of all, very clever words that tell modern stories in a unique no-rethorical way, just as a napolitan can do, living in the most contadictorian italian city. Music as one of the common people of the world, today. don't miss it, non perdetelo.

Walter, Belgium
I was supposed to go to 'an Italian percussion concert'. I didn't know until I was in the middle of it. Fantastic, Beating into my deepest me. Impossible not to dance ... Go and feel it. You should really do that !

GrAnt (Italy)
...incredible artist, the very best!!!

Alexia de Angelis, London
Anybody who likes percussion, folk music, and the mediterranean MUST hear this band. Calzetta, Gianluca is my cousin!!!! hahaha nice to see you here cuz..xxxx

Alexia
Avitabile sums up the very spirit of the forgotten traditions of southern Italy, with passion and soul. I was lucky enough to see them perform in Napoli, where the city's ancient history was awoken by the music's lament to the ways of the regions. Amazing.

michael from highbury
Saw them at the Barbican last night and they were fantastic, everyone should try and get to see them.I'm still dancing the day after and i'm 54

Santa Monica, CA USA
Love to see him and his group inperson. First heard, just recently, Avitabile's vocals "Vota vota" on the KPFK.org global village show.

Mikka, Valby
I haven´t heard them live, but on record Enzo and the bottari-gang surely got some seriously interesting stuff going...

Abi Warwick
Absolutly orgasmic; I saw them at Womad, I danced madly for an hour, claped my hands off.I bought the CD so I can do it over and over and over...The mistical and powerfull druming with Enzo's unic style is head blowing!

Caleb, Bristol
I listened to the first set, and almost left thinking this wasn't for me. At that point the stage erupted! One hour later I was left reeling after experiencing some of the most captivating and exhilarating music I have ever heard. Have just ordered the CD. Incredible

Theo Wood, Bristol
Fantatsic - sorry we missed you Live at WOMAD!!

Simon, Somewhere
Fantastic band - irresistible energy - probably the best performance at this year's womad, along with David Byrne & Tosca Strings (why no mention here by Radio 3?)

Pete Hirons Rochester, kent
What a sensational set that quite had the Italian half of my blood rushing. They were brilliant even if Enzo looks a little like Danny Baker on speed. Everyone that enjoyed this should get onto Amazon, or wherever, and buy the album SAVE THE WORLD. Together we can get this up the charts and each sale benefits Amnesty International as well!

jaysee, hampshire
This set had everything - great rhythms, great music and a set of performers who were enjoying themselves every bit as much as we were. Best gig of the weekend by far, and the only one that had me grinning like a cheshire cat afterwards.

Laila Williams,Swansea
PHWOAR!!!COULDNT TAKE MY EYES OFF THE GORGEOUS,BARREL-BEATING PASSION ON STAGE AND COULDNT KEEP FROM JUMPING AROUND WITH A HUGE SMILE ON MY FACE!WHAT AN INCREDIBLE,INFECTIOUS,BOOMING SOUND OF CELEBRATION...BY FAR THE BEST ACT I SAW AT WOMAD THIS YEAR AND I HOPE I GET TO SEE THEM AGAIN!!

Brett, hounslow
Hypnotic and compulsive during the gig. great to hear a recording last night on the radio. Please play it again on thursday

Helen, London
Can we have some more please?!

Gordon Baxter, UK
Best gig of the WOMAD festival for me. I'd expected people like Tinariwen, Souad Massi, and so on to be good, but Enzo Avitabile and Bottari topped them all.

John Senior - UK - Suffolk
ENZO AVITABILE & BOTTARI Just the most storming set - heart and soul, music of joy. An enthusiasm for life and dance combined with brilliant musical skills. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful

Paul Dalton, Bristol
Womad 2004: they blew me away. That wonderful sight of a band very physically throwing themselves into their performance and enjoying it as much as their audience. See them if you can!

Andy White, Reading
Wonderful set at WOMAD. Real get you up and dance music. Straight to the feet.

Sarah, Suffolk
Enzo Avitabile and Bottari had absolutely everybody dancing - strong, lusty rhythms and echoes of many music traditions. A truly inspired combination of sounds.

Calzetta Gianluca, Neaples (Italy)
