The wonders of Moorish Spain are the starting point for a meandering musical journey through the Sahara and the Maghreb, courtesy of two of London’s finest resident North African musicians; oud player Yazid Fentazi and percussionist Karim Dellali. The pair are the force behind acclaimed Arabic-jazz fusionists Fantazia, and they’re joined on this particular trip by violinist Frank Biddulph who has toured and recorded with The Waterboys, Stereo MCs and Balkan band Mukka.
El-Andalus will start by evoking the mellow intricacies of classical al-andalusian music, a profound musical tradition that goes back fourteen centuries, before exploring Sufi inspired trance rhythms from the Sahara’s edge and ending with a sensually riotous dance-fest powered by the popular chaabi music of Algeria and Egyptian belly dance music.
Roger and Stephanie Steele, from Nottingham For us, the musical high point of the weekend. Oud / tabla and violin just seemed to work so well together - the string instruments having a linked ancestory perhaps?
