El Andalus (copyright Philip Ryalls)
EL-ANDALUS (ALGERIA/UK)

The wonders of Moorish Spain are the starting point for a meandering musical journey through the Sahara and the Maghreb, courtesy of two of London’s finest resident North African musicians; oud player Yazid Fentazi and percussionist Karim Dellali. The pair are the force behind acclaimed Arabic-jazz fusionists Fantazia, and they’re joined on this particular trip by violinist Frank Biddulph who has toured and recorded with The Waterboys, Stereo MCs and Balkan band Mukka.

El-Andalus will start by evoking the mellow intricacies of classical al-andalusian music, a profound musical tradition that goes back fourteen centuries, before exploring Sufi inspired trance rhythms from the Sahara’s edge and ending with a sensually riotous dance-fest powered by the popular chaabi music of Algeria and Egyptian belly dance music.

just brilliant

Roger and Stephanie Steele, from Nottingham
For us, the musical high point of the weekend. Oud / tabla and violin just seemed to work so well together - the string instruments having a linked ancestory perhaps? Does anyone remember Boka Halat at last year's World on your Street?
