DABY TOURÉ (MAURITANIA)

A perennial theme in African music is the tension between tradition and innovation. Some artists play the music of their people and homeland brilliantly but unselfconsciously, without any creative hang-ups or qualms about originality, and the world loves them for it. Others refuse to play that game and yearn to create something new and individual with their music. Daby Touré is a defiant member of the latter category.

He grew up in the sand-blown town of Djéole, near Kaédi, on the banks of the Senegal River, which demarcates the frontier between Mauritania and Senegal . His father was a doctor who left for Paris when political and ethnic tensions made life in Mauritania tricky in the late 1980s, to join the family business - the group Touré Kunda , founded by Daby's uncles. Daby went with his father and slowly became immersed in the musical life of the French capital, determined to carve his own identity, distinct from that of his father and uncles. He formed a group called Touré Touré with his cousin Omar, which had considerable success in France. But in the end, Daby had to go solo in order to achieve complete artistic freedom.

He wrote and recorded a superb set of new songs which deftly married the traditions of his West African home with the international language of jazz, funk and pop, creating warm, breezy, passionate atmospheres with universal appeal. The songs are now released on 'Diam', a brand new CD on Real World Records. Earlier this year Daby supported Peter Gabriel on a European tour, holding audiences of 10,000 plus completely captive with just his voice and guitar.

Daby performed this summer in New York City in Central Park as part of Summerstage. It was the first time I had heard his music and all I can say is his performance was nothing short of amazing. The place was packed, wall to wall, and every soul was on there feat dancing like crazy on a super hot New York summer day. Daby on amped acoustic guitar plus drum/djembe and bass. His incredible sense of rythym guitar impressed me no end, as well as his percussive rythmic interludes tappng his guitar and essesntially turning it into a drum. The performance was taped and recently rebroadcast on local TV. I marvelled again at what a great musician he is, and how he had 5000 people in the palm of his hand.

Daby Toure's music, in my opinion, is some of the best music the continent of Africa has ever produced. His songs are uplifting and inspiring, his live performance's outstanding, and his cd "Diam" is a masterpiece. Thank you Daby for staying true to your musical instincts...

I discovered Daby on this website while looking around for some international music. The musicians on this site are great; very talented. But, there was something about Daby that really stood out to me. I called my local Barnes and Noble and inquired as to their stock of "Diam." They only had one copy left. I asked the gentleman to put my name on it, and I promptly went by to claim my prize after work! Daby, your music is beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with us.

So glad we we've got him for the year. Thanks BBC. I missed Daby at Womad 04, there was so much on at the same time - just listening now - he's brilliant! How can I have missed him? I can also hear threads similar to Rokia Traore.

Daby has musical skill in abundance. Not only does he have a great voice and fantastic presence on stage, when his string broke on stage he finished the song and went acapella for the next one until the guitar was brought back to him. He remained completely unphased as if he had meant to break it in the first place. He has a completely fresh sound. Outstanding.

i thought he was really good, and that he looked like he was really into it, i especially enjoyed watching him whilst he was playing the Guitar as a drum.

Fantastic show, late on Saturday night at the village stage. Even better than playing with the rest of his band on the main stage on Sunday. Beautiful tunes, and great use of the sampler, made Daby's songs so simple but totally engaging. One of the highlights of an outstanding womad!
