German Romantic orchestral songs

Elizabeth Atherton
Elizabeth Atherton
Elizabeth Atherton studied at Trinity College Cambridge, and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama Opera School. She is the winner of the 2001 Maggie Teyte Prize and 2003 Handel Singing Competition. Elizabeth appears regularly in concert and recital in the UK and becomes a Principal Soprano with Welsh National Opera from April 2004 Future roles with Welsh National Opera include Pamina in The Magic Flute, Thibault in Don Carlos, Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni.

Elizabeth can also be heard in recital with Andrew Kennedy and Iain Burnside as part of the Leeds Lieder Biennial Festival of Art Song in October 2005 and in concert with the BBC SO and Pierre Boulez, in London, the following month.

Joint winner of the 2002 Kathleen Ferrier Award, Karen Cargill studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, University of Toronto and National Opera Studio.

In November 2003 she performed Beethoven Symphony No 9 and Opferlied with Michael Tilson Thomas and London Symphony Orchestra. This resulted in a reinvitation to sing Beethoven Symphony No 9 with the LSO and Sir Colin Davis in September this year. In September 2002, she made her BBC Proms debut, performing Mendelssohn Elijah with the London Philharmonic and Kurt Masur. She returned to the Proms this summer, with Masur and London Philharmonic to sing Janacek Glagolitic Mass. Recent engagements include Dido in Dido and Aeneas for the Aix-en-Provence Festival.

Future engagements include Stravinsky Pulcinella with Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Sylvain Cambreling, Mahler Symphony No 2 with Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and Joseph Swensen, Tippett The Knot Garden with BBC Symphony Orchestra and Bruckner Te Deum with Dusseldorf Symphony.


Andrew Kennedy
Andrew Kennedy
Andrew Kennedy studied at King's College Cambridge, and the Royal College of Music. He is currently a Vilar Young Artist at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, and a BBC New Generation Artist. Andrew will represent England in the 2005 BBC Singer of the World Competition, in Cardiff in June 2005.

Andrew is in demand for performances of opera, concert, and recital, and following his time as a Vilar Young Artist from June 2005 future operatic plans include Tamino in The Magic Flute, and Fenton in Sir John in Love for English National Opera, and Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte for Glyndebourne Touring Opera. Andrew will be involved in concert performances of Jaquino in Fidelio with the LSO and Sir Colin Davis, which will become a commercial recording on LSO live.

Future concert work includes Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings at the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester, and with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Dies Natalis with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Andrew will also give a recital of Purcell and Tippett with Paul Crossley at the V & A Museum in London as part of the 2005 BBC Proms.


Matthew Rose
Matthew Rose
Matthew Rose was born in Brighton and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Matthew is currently a Vilar Young Artist at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden.

Whilst a student at the Curtis Institute, Matthew also performed a variety of roles for the Opera Company of Philadelphia. Operatic engagements from the beginning of the 2005/2006 season include Monk in Don Carlos, and the title role in Le nozze di Figaro for Welsh National Opera, his debut at the 2006 Glyndebourne Festival as Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and his return to Covent Garden, as a guest artist, for the roles of Tom in Un ballo in Maschera, Masetto in Don Giovanni, and Zuniga in Carmen. Matthew will also perform the role of Don Fernando in Fidelio with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Edinburgh and London, which mark the birthday celebrations of Sir Charles Mackerras.

This season Matthew appears in the Mozart Requiem with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and in the Verdi Requiem with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and next season makes his concert debut with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as Bass soloist in Beethoven Symphony No 9
