The Last Jew on Crete

Saturday 9 December 2006 19:00-19:20 (Radio 3)

Introduced by Rory MacLean

'Idomeneo' tells of shipwreck and the return of an extraordinary man to the island of Crete. It has a parallel in the present-day story of Nicholas Stavroulakis. In the 1950s Stavroulakis, whose roots are in Crete, arrived on the island after the Jewish community had been destroyed by the Nazis during the Second World War. Here he muses on how he restored the crumbling Etz Hayyim Synagogue in Hania, and has acted as the city's rabbi, much of the time for a community of one - himself!
