8 February 2008
To coincide with Valentine's Day, the programme is dedicated to romance as Ian McMillan and his guests explore the changing meaning of the word romance in literature, from early tales of derring-do to a very contemporary love story from young novelist Rachel Tresize, via the work of the Romantic poets.
Ian also talks to Helen Hackett about The Urania, the first love story written for women by a woman and published by Lady Mary Wroth in 1621.
Novelist Benjamin Markovits discusses fictionalising the life of Byron, and there's a new love song from Steve Adams of The Broken Family Band.

Oscar Peterson
Alyn Shipton presents a special tribute edition of Jazz Library devoted to Oscar Peterson, who died in December 2007 and is regarded as one of the greatest jazz pianists.
The programme not only suggests the essential Peterson CDs, but also calls on the help of the man himself, with an extended interview recorded in 2000.
As well as his acclaimed trios with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis, and later with Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and Martin Drew, Alyn plays Oscar's own favourite recordings with colleagues such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins and Sarah Vaughan.
23:30
David Torn's Prezens
Jez Nelson presents a performance given last month at London's Vortex jazz club featuring guitarist David Torn's latest project Prezens. The group's eponymous album from last year blends intricate compositional structures with electronically manipulated improvisation and noise.
