Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Part Four

With Donald Macleod. Including movements from the Missa Solemnis and the Ninth Symphony, the two grand public utterances of Beethoven's last decade. The Ninth achieved iconic status almost immediately; the Mass, regarded by the composer as his greatest work, is considered to have been neglected.

Also in the programme is Beethoven's last set of piano bagatelles, played on his own fortepiano - a gift from Thomas Broadwood of London.

London Symphony Orchestra

Petroc Trelawny introduces the last of four Mahler concerts featuring Valery Gergiev conducting the LSO.

In this performance, Gergiev reaches the sixth symphony, a work that Alban Berg described as 'the only sixth, despite the Pastoral'. The programme's other work is a version of Tishchenko's First Cello Concerto re-orchestrated by his teacher Dmitri Shostakovich, a work originally written for soloist and wind band.

Battle for Haditha

Matthew Sweet talks to one of the UK's leading mathematicians Marcus du Sautoy about his new book in praise of symmetry. In 12 chapters, one for each month of his working year, he explores the nature of symmetry and how it captured his imagination.

Matthew also visits Liverpool to look at an exhibition that uses skin to explore a new relationship between science and art. He talks to an artist and a tissue engineer about their unique collaboration and what it offers to each discipline.

And documentary maker-turned feature director, Nick Broomfield, talks about his new film The Battle for Haditha, which explores the story of one of the most controversial incidents of the Iraq War when American marines allegedly killed 24 Iraqi citizens.
