Donald Macleod continues his exploration of the musical history of the MacDowell Colony.
4/5. A gifted artist himself, Edward MacDowell almost gave up his musical career to study drawing. He was also fascinated by photography, dabbled in architecture and published a book of verse. All of these interests are reflected in the facilities available to artists wishing to come to The MacDowell Colony.
Donald Macleod talks to composers Paul Moravec and Ned Rorem about their residencies there and sees how MacDowell's vision of an interaction between artistic disciplines can work.

Martin Handley introduces this concert recorded at the Lighthouse, Poole. Theatricality and heart-on-sleeve emotion are never far away in the music of Bernstein and Mahler. Bernstein's symphony tells the story of the gloomy and unheeded Old Testament prophet Jeremiah, whereas Mahler's ends with a touching child's view of heaven.
