Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953)

Beyond the Pacific Ocean

Donald Macleod explores how, like many other artists, the events of the October Revolution determined Prokofiev's departure from the Soviet Union. Having been lucky enough to gain official permission to leave his homeland, in 1918 he stepped onto the Trans-Siberian Railway, eventually making his way to America. Once there he set about establishing a name for himself as a virtuoso pianist and composer.

The Cheltenham Festival plays host to a series of concerts featuring Radio 3's current line-up of New Generation Artists, recorded in Cheltenham's Pittville Pump Room, beginning with the Psophos Quartet from France, with a little help from violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianists Cedric Tiberghien and Andrew West.

Prom 5 Part 1

Presented by Martin Handley, live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.

In a programme dominated by transatlantic sound worlds, the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor, David Robertson, opens the concert with the world premiere of a work by British composer Sam Hayden, the first of ten BBC commissions this Proms season.

This is followed by Bernstein's Auden-inspired The Age of Anxiety, to coincide with the centenary celebration of the poet's birth.

The Bargain, by Truman Capote

A recently discovered gem, The Bargain takes us into the apartment of affluent New Yorker Mrs Chase. An old acquaintance is due to arrive for lunch and Mrs Chase is entertaining the possibility of purchasing a mink coat from her, for her forthcoming trip to Paris. But when her guest arrives, some remarkable revelations call up hitherto unstirred emotions.
