Simon Bolivar National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela
Petroc Trelawny introduces a concert recorded at the 2007 Lucerne Festival performed by the Simon Bolivar National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. This orchestra is the flagship ensemble of Venezuela's system of music education, El Sistema, which makes musicians out of the nation's poorest youths.
It is conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, an alumni of the scheme who has been with the orchestra since he was 16. They perform Mahler's Fifth Symphony and are joined by mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozena for his Ruckert Lieder.
