Is This A Record?

Many classical artists over the years have made recordings which in hindsight might be seen as ill-advised, whether through a dubious attempt at 'crossover', or simply through an unsuitable choice of repertoire.

Norman Lebrecht looks at some of these recordings and discusses them with some of the leading record producers of the last 40 years to try and discover how and why they get made. Contributors include Thomas Z Shepherd, Steven Epstein and Herbert Breslin.

The Early Music Show

Henry VIII

Lucie Skeaping presents a selection of secular music from the so-called Henry VIII Manuscript. Henry VIII was one of the most remarkable and formidable English monarchs, but the portrayal of Henry as a cantankerous despot has outshone the image of the youthful Henry who was devoted to sports and the arts.

In his 20s and 30s, Henry penned several secular compositions, a variety of partsongs and consorts, 34 of which were compiled in the manuscript. It also included works by several other musicians who passed through Henry's court, such as William Cornysh and Robert Fayrfax.

Opera On 3

Britten's Death in Venice

ENO conducted by Edward Gardner

Britten's final opera is based on Thomas Mann's novella about the last days of Aschenbach, a famous writer who, in a city plagued by cholera, is profoundly affected by his meeting with a young Polish boy staying at the same hotel. Ian Bostridge, a noted interpreter of Britten, takes the hugely demanding role of Aschenbach for the first time and the cast also includes a highly versatile Peter Coleman-Wright, who tackles seven different character-sketches ranging from an Old Fop to the voice of a Greek God. Deborah Warner's new production for ENO is the first to be conducted by the company's new Music Director Edward Gardner. Presented by Stephanie Hughes.
