When Rossini moved to Naples, the then capital of the operatic world, he met the prima donna who was to become Mrs Rossini, Isabella Colbran. He also met Beethoven in Vienna, who advised him to stick to comedy. Happily for posterity, this was advice he ignored. The programme includes excerpts from his tragic masterpiece Ermione, which Rossini liked to call his 'little William Tell'.

The Northern Sinfonia at Snape
Martin Handley introduces two concerts from the Snape Maltings, directed by the composer and conductor Thomas Ades.
2/2. The programme has an air of nostalgia as Stravinsky's affectionate pastiche of 18th century music sits comfortably alongside two homages to Francois Couperin, including Ades's own re-clothing of the French composer's keyboard music in startling new orchestral colours.
