Philharmonia Orchestra at Snape
Martin Handley introduces two concerts from the Snape Maltings, directed by the composer and conductor Thomas Ades.
1/2. The programme centres around Ades's own suite from his opera Powder Her Face, which tells the story of the Duchess of Argyll, the Dirty Duchess, whose sexual exploits caused a scandal in Britain during her divorce proceedings. Surrounding it are grand orchestral waltzes and Respighi's sumptuous score, which celebrates the riotous colour and spectacle of the festivals of his adopted city.

The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1 was a source of huge distress and hardship, but was also a powerful catalyst for artistic and cultural development. Some artists fled north, like the painters Monet and Pissarro, others such as Zola and Maupassant took the war as the touchstone for some of their greatest writing.
