Elgar 150th anniversary

Concert 1

Tom Service introduces concerts celebrating the 150th anniversary of Elgar's birth.

1/3. The Philharmonia perform some of the composer's most popular orchestral works, spanning the whole of his career from the early Froissart overture, full of youthful exuberance, to his opulent First Symphony, not begun until his fiftieth year. Norwegian cellist Truls Mork joins the orchestra for Elgar's popular Cello Concerto.

One of the most celebrated jazz musicians in Europe, Stanko looks back on his collaborations with Krzysztof Komeda and Edward Vesala, and discusses the albums he has made under his own name, including Litania and Leosia.

Gwilym Simcock Big Band

Jez Nelson introduces an exclusive session recorded for the programme by the Gwilym Simcock Big Band.

The first jazz musician to be selected as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation artist, Simcock is one of the most talented contemporary pianists working on the British jazz scene. His virtuosic, classically influenced sound and ability to dovetail ideas has led to stylistic comparisons with Keith Jarrett, and his band brings together many of the UK's best instrumentalists, including saxophonists Iain Ballamy and Julian Siegel, trumpeter Noel Langley and guitarist John Parricelli.
