L'infedelta delusa and L'incontro improvviso

Donald Macleod continues his exploration of Haydn's neglected operatic masterpieces with two comedies from the 1770s: L'infedelta delusa and L'incontro improvviso. The latter features the same kind of Oriental escape storyline that Mozart was to use a few years later in his Abduction from the Seraglio.

Philip Bullock presents a portrait of Russian grand duke Konstantin Romanov and asks what light he sheds on our understanding of 19th-century Russia. A member of the ruling Romanov dynasty, he was a poet, a champion of the arts and a friend of Tchaikovsky and, like the composer, he was homosexual.
