Early works by Elgar, Mendelssohn and Bizet
With Martin Handley.
The theme of youthful inspiration runs through this concert, given last month in Birmingham's Symphony Hall.
Elgar's Wand of Youth Suites are based on music the composer wrote as a young child for a fantasy play he and his sister performed at their home. Bizet composed his Symphony in C at the age of 17, while Mendelssohn wrote his Concerto for Two Pianos at just 14.

Tenor saxophonist and flautist Charles Lloyd is one of the elder statesmen of jazz, highly respected for his work with Chico Hamilton and Cannonball Adderley as well as for the series of quartets he has led since the 1960s.
On the eve of the weekend in which he makes rare British appearances at the Barbican and at Cheltenham, he joins Alyn Shipton to help select the finest recordings of his career, including from an early quartet with Keith Jarrett, and his long-term partnership with drummer Billy Higgins.

Cheltenham Jazz Festival Live Show
Jez Nelson hosts a live broadcast from St Andrew's church at this year's Cheltenham Jazz Festival, featuring sets from some of the biggest names on the festival programme. On the bill are the Claudia Quintet and the Bob Brookmeyer Quartet.
The Claudia Quintet, led by New York drummer John Hollenbeck, is an eccentric ensemble featuring Ted Reichman on accordion and Matt Moran on vibes and percussion. Their compositions are cutting-edge, fusing jazz, classical and progressive rock with an end-product that is as distinctive as it is technically brilliant.
Hollenbeck and his bassist Drew Gress join Brad Shepik on guitar to form Bob Brookmeyer's Quartet. The valve trombonist has worked with numerous great names, including Gerry Mulligan, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards.
