The Wonder of Wunderlich

Tom Robinson tells the story of German singer Fritz Wunderlich, from his humble origins in Freiburg to his premature death at the age of 35 in 1966. Wunderlich was a natural lyric tenor, who excelled in opera, Lieder and lighter repertoire. His recording of Granada is still considered unsurpassed. Contributors include tenors John Mark Ainsley and Ian Partridge and pianist Iain Burnside.

The Munich Court: Catherine Bott presents a programme of music with connections to Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria. He was a talented bass viol player and surrounded himself with many musicians, both in his court and in exile. Music includes works by Forqueray, Pez and Rupert Ignaz Mayr.

Monteverdi's L'Orfeo

400th Anniversary

Stephanie Hughes celebrates the 400th anniversary of this outstanding work, seen as the first true opera ever written, with a performance selected from five different recordings. Studio guests John Whenham and Robert Hollingworth join her to discuss Monteverdi's achievement, with additional comment from those who have performed Orfeo, including conductors Jane Glover and Philip Pickett, singer Catherine Bott and director David Freeman.

Ian McMillan searches for traces of the life of Kurt Schwitters, Dada artist and sound poet, who left Nazi Germany, was interned in the Isle of Man and spent his last years in Ambleside. He worked as a portrait painter but created some of his most radical work there - transforming a farm building into an environment called the Merzbarn, and writing an anti-Nazi satirical play, The Family Plot. Ian also hears his poetry, talks to those who knew him or know about him and stages a scratch performance of his play on a Windermere steamboat
