In Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, a Chinese emperor is enraptured with the beautiful singing of his treasured nightingale. Completed between 1908 and 1914, Stravinsky's charming setting starts off with rich and subtly blended sonorities but soon enters a modernist world of brash and striking colours.
