Donald Macleod recreates the premieres of five different Puccini operas.
On 17th February 1904, Madama Butterfly had its eagerly awaited premiere at La Scala, with Rosina Storchio in the title role. But circumstances conspired to make this occasion one of the most notorious flops in operatic history.

Dazzling young American violinist Leila Josefowicz returns to the Proms with Shostakovich's haunting yet searingly virtuosic concerto. The influence of Brahms can be heard in Webern's youthful Passacaglia while Brahms' final symphony was the culmination of a lifetime of struggle with symphonic form.

Louis MacNeice lived in Birmingham in the early 1930s, teaching Classics at the university. Despite his ambivalent relationship with the city, the years he spent there were to prove critical in both his personal and poetic life. The poet Paul Farley goes in search of MacNeice's 'hazy city'.

By the time Barber reached the age of 40, he was in constant demand, both as composer and conductor.
He was invited to London to record his cello concerto with the soloist Zara Nelsova. Donald Macleod introduces the final movement from that vintage recording, plus two commissions - one to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the League of Composers and the other a chamber piece for the principals of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
