Louis Spohr (1784-1859)

Part One

History is often harsh in its judgements, and Spohr perhaps might have more grounds to feel aggrieved than most. He was one of the most noble composers ever, a gracious and dignified figure whose legacy was immense. Donald Macleod reassesses Spohr's reputation, arguing that we should give him more credit than he often receives.

Sean Rafferty presents a selection of music and keeps us up to date with what's happening in the arts world.

The programme begins with the winners of the 2006 London International String Quartet Competition, the Formosa Quartet - fresh from their success at London's Wigmore Hall on Sunday night.

Sean is then joined by rising star of the conducting world, Edward Gardner - with opera director John Lloyd Davies and tenor Robert Murray. They give a taste of Mozart's early opera Il Re Pastore, about to open at the Royal Opera's Linbury Theatre.

Violinist and conductor Dmitry Sitkovetsky is Sean's final guest ahead of his concert with the London Philharmonic on Wednesday.
