Donald Macleod and Jeremy Summerly discuss the blossoming Renaissance interest in the poetry of the classical authors, and how composers looked to them for works to set. But Lassus also looked to contemporary authors, and ultimately was to produce significant works drawn from sources ancient and modern.

Richard Hickox conducts the Northern Sinfonia in Roger Quilter's Suite Where the Rainbow Ends, and there are a couple of sleigh rides alongside some lively dance music from the 16th Century.

Vaughan Williams's The Wasps

Andrew McGregor introduces the complete incidental music for The Wasps, by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Composed originally for a 1909 production of Aristophanes' play at Cambridge University, this performance is the first broadcast of a new edition featuring a translation and adaptation by David Pountney.
