Continuing a series of concerts to celebrate the landmark birthday of a conductor dubbed 'the musician's musician'. A historic recording from 1984 - Handel's opera Julius Caesar, recorded in English. Presented by Donald Macleod, in conversation with Sir Charles Mackerras and Dame Janet Baker, who starred in the title role.

William Alwyn (1905-1985)

Part Four

During the 1950s, Alwyn's home and professional life had become so stressful that in the early 60s, he suffered a nervous breakdown. Donald Macleod looks at some of the chamber music Alwyn wrote during those difficult years, and introduces a work dedicated to the man who was perhaps more of an influence on Alwyn's career than any other person - Sir Henry Wood.
