One of Alwyn's long-cherished dreams while serving out his years writing film scores was to compose for the stage, and once he'd settled into his new home in Suffolk, he spent the next 14 years working on two operas.
Donald Macleod presents highlights from the second, based on August Strindberg's play of the same name, and introduces one of his last orchestral works, inspired by the 17th Century English writer Sir Thomas Browne.

After 6.00pm, conductor Joseph Swensen pops into the studio ahead of his concert tomorrow night with the London Mozart Players at Croydon's Fairfield Halls.
Conductor Vernon Handley, who celebrates his 75th birthday today, joins us from the BBC's Cardiff studios to talk about his love of British repertoire, and forthcoming recordings including Bax Tone Poems and York Bowen concertos. There's also a chance to hear a sneak preview of his latest recording - Bantock's massive Omar Khayyam.

London Jazz Festival
To celebrate the opening night of the London Jazz Festival, sponsored by BBC Radio 3, Jez Nelson presents a specially extended show, with performances by some of the festival's biggest stars live from the Pizza Express Jazz Club in London.
Including one of the most successful jazz crossover acts of the last couple of years, the US piano trio The Bad Plus; popular Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen; leader of the Jazz Passengers, saxophonist Roy Nathanson, with his Barbes band; and saxophonist Archie Shepp.
Shepp was a major figure in defining the direction of the music in the 1960s, alongside the likes of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Miles Davis. This is a rare chance to hear a living legend playing live in an intimate venue.
