William Alwyn (1905-1985)

Part Four

During the 1950s, Alwyn's home and professional life had become so stressful that in the early 60s, he suffered a nervous breakdown. Donald Macleod looks at some of the chamber music Alwyn wrote during those difficult years, and introduces a work dedicated to the man who was perhaps more of an influence on Alwyn's career than any other person - Sir Henry Wood.

Maureen Lipman performs live in the studio as Florence Foster Jenkins, the American soprano whose self belief far outweighed her ability to carry a tune. Despite her technical limitations, she packed Carnegie Hall and is the subject of the new musical comedy, Glorious! starring Lipman in the title role.

Conductor and founder of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Ivan Fischer comes in to talk to Petroc about his forthcoming concerts in London this weekend.

London Jazz Festival artists, Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita and vahila master Justin Vali perform live in the studio. The London Jazz Festival kicks off this Friday.
