William Alwyn (1905-1985)

Part Two

During the Second World War, Alwyn began composing for propaganda films and documentaries and was soon in demand for feature films. Donald Macleod introduces music from the soundtracks of some of his best-known films, plus a recording of Alwyn conducting his own harp concerto and his first venture into symphonic writing.

Geoffrey Smith investigates what it's like playing in one of America's top orchestras and what makes The Cleveland Orchestra in particular so special from the players' point of view. With contributions from Concert Master William Preucil and trombonist Richard Stout.

There is a great tradition stretching back to George Szell of enjoying rehearsals, something that the players and today's Music Director Franz Welser-Möst also share. Followed by performances recorded at Severance Hall in Cleveland.

Part Three

Donald Macleod continues his exploration of the various roles Vivaldi stepped into - by looking at the composer as teacher. In this persona, Vivaldi is best known for his long association with the Pieta, the girls' orphanage where the talents of the pupils scaled astonishing peaks of accomplishment.
