Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894)

Part One

The French composer Emmanuel Chabrier holds a unique position in musical history. His ground-breaking harmonies were cited as formative influences on later composers such as Ravel, Debussy and Poulenc. Although he was better educated than most amateurs, Chabrier was a largely self-taught musician and spent the first 18 years of his working life as a civil servant before switching to a career composing full time.

From Wigmore Hall in London, presented by Stephanie Hughes.

The Czech Wihan Quartet celebrate 20 years together this year, and unusually for the quartet world, still with the original four players - Leos Cepicky and Jan Schulmeister (violin); Jiri Zigmund (viola) and Ales Kasprik (cello).

From early success in Prague in 1988 they have become universally acclaimed. In this concert, they play quartets by Haydn and their own countryman, Dvorák.

Chris de Souza visits Britain's smallest ancient cathedral, St Asaph, for a concert given at the North Wales International Music Festival. Pascal Rogé flies the Tricolor for French music with Poulenc's flamboyant concerto, and the BBC NOW's Principle Oboe, David Cowley, plays Francaix's charming Flower Clock.

The Times Are So Strange

Donald Macleod looks at Hartmann's 'confessional works', which expressed his despondency over the Third Reich. In the build-up to the war, he withdrew into internal exile, banning his own works from being performed.
