The last work Alban Berg ever completed, and dedicated 'To the memory of an angel', is performed by the dazzling Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos. The programme also features an intriguing new work by young British composer Morgan Hayes, and the Beethoven Symphony famously described as the apotheosis of the dance.

Prom 71 Part One

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, presented by Andrew McGregor.

Zubin Mehta makes a rare London appearance to conduct the first of the Vienna Philharmonic's two Proms; with Haydn's rousing Drumroll symphony, the dramatic suite Berg compiled from his first opera (ending this season's centenary celebrations of the composer) and, after the interval, one of the seminal works of the 20th Century, Stravinsky's hedonistic ballet score.

There's music from the new Kronos Quartet album, featuring Bollywood singer Asha Bhosle, alongside an earlier recording from 1990 of their string quartet arrangement of Tallis's forty part motet, Spem In Alium.

The programme also features Bernard Herrmann's depiction of New York's sleazy underbelly, composed for the film Taxi Driver, and music from revolutionary pop star-turned-Brazilian Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil. With Verity Sharp.
