Carl Maria von Weber (1786 - 1826)
Part Two
'If there's no sincerity in her feelings, then the final chord of my whole life has sounded!' From an early age, Weber loved women - even at 16, he was dedicating compositions to the fair sex of Hamburg. After numerous affairs, he settled down with soprano Caroline Brandt - one of two lasting relationships in his life. The other was with his friend, the clarinettist Heinrich Baermann, for whom Weber wrote some of his most popular music.

Christine Schäfer's mesmerising portrayal of Lulu, Berg's seductive and enigmatic heroine, is still remembered from the 1996 Proms season. She revisits the character in Berg's Lulu Suite. Then in complete contrast, in the second part of the concert, she sings the magical and innocent vision of heaven which ends Mahler's most classical symphony, his Symphony No 4.

Pierre Boulez at 80
No one in contemporary music arouses such fierce passion as the eminent conductor and composer Pierre Boulez, who celebrates his 80th birthday later this week. At one time a young firebrand who wanted to blow up opera houses, he's now an immensely powerful figure in the musical world.
Ivan Hewett looks at the enigmatic, restless creator behind the public figure, through interviews with friends and colleagues such as the conductor Daniel Barenboim, the composers Betsy Jolas, George Benjamin and Maurice Jarre, the pianist, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and critics in London, France and New York.
