Prom 46 Part One

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.

To mark his 90th anniversary, New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn's beautifully crafted one movement symphony opens the Proms debut concert of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. A selection from Mahler's settings from the German folk-poetry collection is sung by a former BBC Radio 3 New Generation artist, also New Zealand born, and the concert ends with Sibelius' symphony evoking the immensity of Finnish woodlands.

Presented by John Shea.

The Europe of the Mind

Part 2 - Restless Europeans

The Middle Ages get a bad press, depicted as years of stagnation, constant warring and - worst of all - the black death. But medieval historian Miri Rubin has a very different view. She argues that these years are, in fact, the time when modern Europe was born.

Miri visits some of Europe's great medieval cities and hears how constant migrations during this period transformed the cultural face of Europe, bringing new institutions, social hierarchies and attitudes that have changed little to this day.

Late Junction

18 August 2005

A voiceless Song of Songs, organ music born of civil disobedience and South African swing jazz, made in London. Verity Sharp unpicks the conundrum in her choice of tracks for late night listening.

Composer of the Week

Ernst von Dohnányi (1877-1960)

Part Five

Unable to refute the pro-Nazi allegations made against him, Dohnányi knew he wouldn't be able to return to his native Hungary. He decided to make his way to Argentina, but the accusations followed him, and his career as a concert pianist was almost destroyed.

He was saved by an offer of work in the United States and there lived out the remainder of his days. Donald Macleod introduces works from Dohnányi's American years, including the Violin Concerto No 2 and the piece composed as an affectionate tribute to his adopted country - the American Rhapsody.
