Concert Five

Following his performance of the Grieg Concerto at Friday's Prom, Lars Vogt performs Schubert's final and perhaps most personal sonata. The programme begins with Brahms' wistful lullaby and also includes a new work by the pianist's wife, Russian composer Tatjana Komarova.

15 August 2005 Prom 42 Part One

Tchaikovsky's rarely performed one-act opera, Iolanta, is a simple but touching fairytale which tells the story of a blind, innocent heroine who falls in love with the knight Vaudémont. As her love is awakened, her sight gradually returns.

Originally commissioned and first performed with The Nutcracker, it is fitting that these two works are reunited for tonight's performance.

Ernst von Dohnányi (1877-1960)

Part Two

Dohnányi was attracting notice as a virtuoso pianist within weeks of his graduation from the Budapest Academy, and at just 20, his performances were drawing critical acclaim from audiences in Berlin and London. But his talents as a composer had not gone unnoticed. Donald Macleod introduces the piece that brought him international recognition - his first piano concerto.
