Shostakovich's music is forever associated with the huge events of the 20th Century, and encompasses two World Wars and between them, the formation of the Soviet Union. In this concert, Radio 3 New Generations Artists play two works written during and after the Second World War.

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.

A Proms debut and a sparkling programme for a versatile chamber orchestra beginning with Beethoven's mythical overture and Tippet's tribute to British music through the ages. Soprano Kate Royal, winner of last year's Ferrier Award, joins them for two timeless Mozart arias, and the evening concludes with Beethoven's Little F major.

Prom 27 Part One

Live from the Royal Albert Hall.

Ravi Shankar, the legendary ambassador of Indian Classical Music, makes his Proms debut at the age of 85. His daughter and protégée Anoushka joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra to perform his Sitar Concerto No.1, before the pair team up for a sequence of ragas.

The concert begins with Delhi-born composer Param Vir's 1994 orchestral work based on the story of Milarepa, the 11th-century Tibetan saint. Presented by Martin Handley.
