Lausanne Chamber Orchestra

Music by Mozart, Scarlatti, Tartini, Handel and Purcell

From the Salle Métropole, Lausanne, virtuoso baroque violinist, Fabio Biondi, directs the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, one of Europe's finest modern chamber orchestras, in a programme of contrasts and connections. Music travels widely, says Biondi, and composers have always greatly influenced each other.

The BBC Singers are conducted by Danish composer Bo Holten in a recording of his The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, based on William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience, including musical references to the mediaeval round Sumer is icumen in and the famous Tallis Canon.

Hans Werner Henze (b 1926)

1967 and After

Henze became deeply involved in the unrest of the late sixties, his music also becoming politically radical. His search for answers to how music could be truly revolutionary took him to Cuba, and led him to dedicate his oratorio Raft of the Medusa to Che Guevara. Donald Macleod explores this tumultuous period in the composer's life and work.
