4/5. Humphrey Burton presents excerpts from Mass (1971), the Jerome Robbins ballet the Dybbuk (1974) and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (1976), Bernstein's ill-fated collaboration with Alan Jay Lerner.

Among today's guests are the composer's daughter, Jamie Bernstein Thomas, who has performed in Mass, and Patricia Routledge, who played the First Lady in the original production of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, which she described as a diamond studded dinosaur.

John Toal presents the third of four recitals from Belfast devoted to French song from Berlioz to the present day, marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ernest Chausson.

In today's programme, soprano mezzo Brigitte Balleys and pianist Thierry Ravassard perform works by Berlioz, Faure, Chausson, Mel-Bonis, Debussy and Caroline Charriere.

Bernstein Season
Tommy Pearson presents a series of programmes featuring the BBC Orchestras and BBC Singers in performances of Bernstein's own music and key works that he premiered or championed, including the music of Mahler, Messiaen, Shostakovich, Copland and Britten, including excerpts from the complete cycle of Bernstein's symphonies performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leonard Slatkin.

This concert was specially recorded for Radio 3's Bernstein Season by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bernstein protege, David Charles Abell.

Wonderful Town
Radio 3's week-long Bernstein season continues with his sophisticated and stylish Broadway musical Wonderful Town, in this performance from the BBC Proms in 1999.

The witty story centres on two sisters from Ohio, Ruth and Eileen, who come to the Big Apple in search of fame and fortune.

Part Five
5/5. Humphrey Burton rounds up his week on Broadway with Bernstein's most popular work, West Side Story (1957). With the book by Arthur Laurents, choreography by Jerome Robbins and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the team was in Sondheim's words "a unique concatenation of people".

With contributions from the orchestrator Sid Ramin, a friend of Bernstein's since childhood, and producer Ruth Mitchell, production manager on the original production.
