George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759)

Part Four

4/5. Between the accounts of the Water party in 1717 and February 1919, there is no mention of Handel's activities in the London press. He was, during this time, composer in residence at Cannons, the magnificent palace of the Duke of Chandos in Edgware, where he composed music for private performance, completing one his finest works of the decade: Acis and Galatea.

English Music from The Sage

Tenor James Gilchrist with pianist Anna Tilbrook give a concert of English songs from The Sage, Gateshead.

First, three Purcell realisations by Britten and Tippett, followed by Tippett's own mammoth song-cycle, The Heart's Assurance. The concert concludes with some of Britten's folksong arrangements and then his sublime cycle, On this Island.

RPS Awards 2005

An evening celebrating the RPS Awards, presented in association with BBC Radio 3 and including a special Listeners' Award.

Many of the world's finest artists gathered last night at the Dorchester Hotel, London, for the ceremony. The 13 prestigious awards honour outstanding achievements by composers, performers and arts organisations which demonstrate the RPS' key values of encouraging creativity, recognising excellence and promoting understanding.

Sir Andrew Davis and Radio 3's Stephanie Hughes present the awards with a keynote speech by Jude Kelly. Sean Rafferty talks to the musicians and introduces performances of their music.

5/5. Final Years: Donald Macleod looks at Romanian composer George Enescu's final works. Moving to a self-imposed exile in Paris after the Second World War, his life ended there, in poverty, in 1955.
