2/5. Handel's most regular patron in 1707-8 was Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli, with whom the composer resided in splendour, dividing his time between the Palazzo Bonelli in Rome and the Prince's castle in Vignanello.

Brodsky Quartet

Perooc Trelawny presents the Brodsky Quartet opening this first series of Lunchtime Concerts from the Sage, Gateshead with three gems from the English string repertoire.

A beautiful Chacony in G minor by Purcell kicks off the proceedings, followed by Frank Bridge's early Three Idylls. The concert ends with Elgar's sublime String Quartet in Em.

Martin Handley presents a concert from The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

Guest conductor Susanna Malkki takes charge of The Halle Orchestra for a UK premiere of Colin Matthews' Reflected Images.

They're then joined by pianist Kathryn Stott for a performance of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G. The concert ends with Berlioz' programmatic Symphonie Fantastique.

George Enescu (1881 - 1955)

3/5. First World War

Enescu's belief that music could attain an uplifting of the spirit and a transformation of the soul was formed during the First World War in Romania, where after 1916 he was playing to wounded and dying soldiers almost every day.

As well as making a huge contribution to making the war bearable for his fellow countrymen, Enescu composed several works which often seem removed from the destruction around him. Presented by Donald Macleod.
