Through the Seasons
When you consider the entire catalogue of the Early Music repertoire, surely no work is as pervasive in modern day life as Vivaldi's Quattro Stagioni, with the archetypal music of the seasons seeming to have crept into every facet of modern life.
Since their discovery, the history of these concerti have been as much about the performance as the music. Lucie Skeaping looks at some of the many recordings of the work, and examines through them how performances of the pieces have changed over the decades.

The Magic Flute
Act One
Tamino is rescued from a huge serpent by the three attendants of the Queen of the Night. They persuade him to rescue the Queen's beautiful daughter, Pamina, who is held prisoner by Sarastro. Tamino sets off on his adventure, protected by a magic flute and glockenspiel, and with Papageno the birdcatcher for company.
Mozart's allegorical singspiel is open to many interpretations, but there's no doubting the quality of the music. It's performed tonight by a top cast, including Lisa Milne as Pamina and Matthew Polenzani as Tamino, conducted by James Levine.
