Donald Macleod explores the relationship between Chausson's early experiences and his music. Ernest Chausson was a serious, thoughtful and somewhat melancholic man. The only surviving son of a prosperous building contractor, he was educated at home, away from the company of other children, in an adult and highly cultured environment. Chausson later acknowledged this as having had a lasting effect on him.

Complete performance
From Manchester's Bridgewater Hall, The Halle Orchestra begin with Stravinsky's elephantine Circus Polka, under their assistant conductor Andre de Ridder.
The orchestra are then joined by celebrity percussionists for a rare performance of Erik Satie's extraordinary ballet, Parade.
Music Director, Mark Elder, then takes the reins for the world premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Riffs and Refrains, with clarinettist Michael Collins as the soloist.
The last two pieces in the concert follow a sporting theme - Debussy's tennis love match, Jeux, and excerpts from Shostakovich's exciting football-based ballet, The Golden Age.
Presented by Louise Fryer.

28 March 2005
John Berger has been described as 'genius invisible'. With books like Ways of Seeing, he revolutionised the way we look at painting and the history of art.
In this programme length interview, he talks to Phillip Dodd about his enduring, yet seemingly contradictory, engagement with the enduring mystery of great art as well as the lived experience of the oppressed. How can he reconcile his obsession with the transcendent and immaterial with his commitment to the real, the social, and the political? And why does he still believe that art is the moral centre of our world?
