Donald Macleod looks at Verdi's relationship with the opera singer Giuseppina Strepponi - one of his most loyal supporters. Despite the difficulties her tarnished reputation caused the couple, their relationship endured for half a century. Verdi relied on her steady emotional support, advice over singers and her ability to deal with all his professional matters - including tactfully negotiating disputes with colleagues and friends.

Chris de Souza presents the first of four concerts given at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow as part of the Tippett Centenary celebrations.
Soprano Catherine Bott sings music by Tippett and Purcell, accompanied by David Owen Norris. He also plays one of Tippett's piano sonatas.

The acclaimed young British tenor Toby Spence in a recital recorded for the show. He sings songs by Poulenc and Mahler alongside Britten's Holy Sonnets of John Donne, written in 1945 after the composer returned from giving recitals with

Music by Tippett and Beethoven
Tonight's concert comes from Manchester's Bridgewater Hall, given by the Halle Orchestra, and continues this week featuring music of Sir Michael Tippett.
The concert juxtaposes Tippett's pictorial Ritual Dances and lyrical Triple Concerto with two overtures by a composer whose influence played a large part throughout Tippett's creative life, Beethoven.

"My success is quite a surprise to me; for the first half of my life I was known as the composer who was never performed. I had no luck until the great conductor Leopold Stokowski conducted one of my pieces and decided to champion my work."
The 1950s marked the high tide of Alan Hovhaness's success as a composer, in particular with works such as 'Mysterious Mountain', which was championed by Fritz Reiner.
