Sibelius: The Path to the Symphony

4. 1897-8

The second half of this experimental decade brings certain preoccupations into tighter focus. Finnish mythology provokes a vivid portrayal of Vilhelmi riding some treacherous rapids. A stage-play by a drinking-companion initiates a fruitful vein of theatre music, as well as setting up some political resonances as Finland becomes restive under the Russian yoke.
