The late 1890s in Finland provoke more or less open protests at Russia's heavy-handed dominance. Sibelius makes more than one powerful contribution. Tying together the various strands of this uneasy decade, a long-contemplated First Symphony marks at once a culmination and a fresh start.

Jazz on 3

Tonight's Jazz on 3 features a live recording from earlier this year of alto saxophonist Greg Osby with his US quartet at London's Pizza Express. Osby was a leading figure in MBASE - New York's jazz movement of the eighties - where he established his reputation for a rich, passionate and rhythmically complex approach. Today he is signed to the legendary Blue Note label where over the last decade he has released a string of intensely creative albums. This gig finds him exploring a selection of newly arranged jazz standards.

He is joined by Megumi Yonezawa on piano, Matt Brewer on bass and Damion Reid on drums.
