Composer of the Week

Sibelius: The Path to the Symphony

4. 1897-8

The second half of this experimental decade brings certain preoccupations into tighter focus. Finnish mythology provokes a vivid portrayal of Vilhelmi riding some treacherous rapids. A stage-play by a drinking-companion initiates a fruitful vein of theatre music, as well as setting up some political resonances as Finland becomes restive under the Russian yoke.

Composer of the Week

Gabriel Faure (1845 - 1924)

Part Five

Part 5.

In 1871, the Societe Nationale de Musique was set up to promote the works of young French composers. When by 1910 it had become heavily biased towards the music of the disciples of the composer Cesar Franck, another group, the Societe Musicale Independente was set up in opposition. A few years later, Gabriel Faure found himself in the rather bizarre position of being president of both groups.
