Composer of the Week

Gabriel Faure (1845 - 1924)

Part Five

Part 5.

In 1871, the Societe Nationale de Musique was set up to promote the works of young French composers. When by 1910 it had become heavily biased towards the music of the disciples of the composer Cesar Franck, another group, the Societe Musicale Independente was set up in opposition. A few years later, Gabriel Faure found himself in the rather bizarre position of being president of both groups.

With Donald Macleod.

Jazz on 3

Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio and Tribute to John Stevens

In 2003 the trio led by the Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel performed at London's Vortex Club. The gig was a sell out, mainly because Muthspiel's drummer is the great Brian Blade, who is more usually seen on the stages of large concert halls rather than the intimate surroundings of a small club.

It may have been the superstar drummer who drew them in the first instance, but after the gig all the audience were talking about Muthspiel. They had discovered what Brian Blade already knew: that he is a world-class guitarist even though he is little known in this country. Muthspiel is a breathtaking virtuoso but thankfully he is also a stylish soloist - his speed of invention matches the speed of his fingers.

Earlier this year the trio made a triumphant return to the Vortex and Jazz on 3 was there to capture the action. Tonight Jez Nelson presents a full set recorded at the club.

Also in the programme, Jez presents a tribute to British drummer John Stevens, who died ten years ago this week. Stevens was a great instrumentalist and improviser, but he is best remembered as a huge motivating force on the domestic music scene from the late 60s to the early 90s. He brought musicians together, found venues and festivals for them to play, encouraged younger artists, and in doing so, he was a key figure in the development of the European avant-garde scene in the early 70s. Tonight, Jez is joined by a host of Stevens' friends and colleagues to celebrate his legacy.
