Double Bill: Ken Vandermark's School Days and Evan Parker US Tour rpt
School Days are the US Scandinavian ensemble of cult Chicago saxophonist Ken Vandermark. Their unique and contemporary sound encompasses great tunes, swinging hard bop, incredible virtuosity, wit, balladry, free improv and just about every other facet of contemporary Jazz .The group features Vandermark's long time foil Jeb Bishop, bassist Ingerbrigt H?ker Flaten, vibes player Kjell Nordeson, and the percussion fireworks of Paal-Nilssen Love.
In the year marking the 60th birthday of free jazz godfather Evan Parker, the saxophonist went 'on the road' in the US, performing at many out of the way locations as well as the main centres for improvised music. The second part of tonight's double bill features some of the highlights of that tour and talks to those who support the music in some unlikely parts of the country. Parker's trio is completed by his long time musical companions Alexander von Schlippenbach on piano and Paul Lytton on drums.
