Twenty Minutes

The Princess and the Carpenter

By Michelene Wandor.

Charpentier, who wrote all the music in this evening's concert, also wrote the first sonata to be composed in France, commissioned by the Marie, the Duchess of Guise, a cousin of Loius XIV. This play imagines the encounter between the composer and the duchess in which she asks for a piece of music which will shock the court. In a flirtatious tussle, hinting of intrigue, she plans an act of cultural revenge.

Marie ...... Miriam Margolyes
Charpentier ...... Sam Dastor

Directed by Julian May.

Weekday Feature

The Art of Laziness

Is indolence the enemy or ally of creativity? Who gets labelled lazy and why? Is idleness the refuge of the supine or is passive resistance possible? The poet and critic Patrick McGuinness traces the cultural history of idleness from the leisured Romans to the agitated indolence of the situationists in 60's Paris. With contributions from Andrew Motion, Mary Beard , Valentine Cunningham and David Dabydeen.

Composer of the Week

Erich Korngold (1897 - 1957)

5. Return to Vienna

The later years of Erich Korngold's life were overshadowed by the time he had spent in Hollywood as one of the most successful film composers of the period. When Nazi occupation was over and it was safe to return home to Vienna the world he had known eleven years earlier had disappeared forever. The family house had been requisitioned for refugees and was in a state of disrepair. The Opera House which had put on so many performances of his music had been burned out. Many of their friends and relatives had either emigrated or been killed in the Holocaust. Korngold planned a comeback but he discovered that his music was now regarded as being out of step and old fashioned.

With Donald Macleod.
