Concert 8

Live from the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

A buoyant end to the series with the energy of Janacek's adventurous piece for solo piano and ensemble, and Martinu's witty ballet score peopled with kitchen utensils! Anniversary composer Dallapiccola adds magical stillness and solitude, while Simon Holt's new work is a plain mystery: its different sections are labelled 'Exhibits A to H'. Evidence... but of what?

Composer of the Week

Erich Korngold (1897 - 1957)

2. Adolescence

Having achieved fame and critical acclaim before he reached his teens Erich Korngold continued to build his reputation by creating another sensation with a Piano Trio, his Opus 1. Although seemingly incapable of putting a foot wrong, difficulties did arise over performances of his music because of his music critic father, Julius Korngold. He'd made some powerful enemies in Vienna through making his famously outspoken views public knowledge by writing for the influential paper Neue Freie Presse. Despite a premiere for the Trio in Munich, when it was subsequently performed in Vienna the performance whipped up a storm of bad feeling amongst Julius's detractors. Fortunately there were still those such as Felix Weingartner, who championed the boy's music regardless of his father's controversial opinions.

With Donald Macleod.
