Erich Korngold (1897 - 1957)
5. Return to Vienna
The later years of Erich Korngold's life were overshadowed by the time he had spent in Hollywood as one of the most successful film composers of the period. When Nazi occupation was over and it was safe to return home to Vienna the world he had known eleven years earlier had disappeared forever. The family house had been requisitioned for refugees and was in a state of disrepair. The Opera House which had put on so many performances of his music had been burned out. Many of their friends and relatives had either emigrated or been killed in the Holocaust. Korngold planned a comeback but he discovered that his music was now regarded as being out of step and old fashioned.

The Day Carlos Died by Paul Heritage
On 16 July 2003 Paul Heritage's life was changed when his lover Carlos Calchi, a Brazilian actor and director who wanted to change lives, was gunned down in a random act of slaughter by those he wanted to help. This montage is the result of Heritage and producer Kate Rowland's search for an answer, combining elements of the murder investigation and interviews with artists, politicians and prisoners.
Originally broadcast in February this year, to an overwhelming response.

Double Bill: Iain Ballamy, Stian Carstensen and Frank Zappa
Tonight's programme continues the summer season of repeats of the most popular gigs broadcast over the last year, as voted for by listeners. This week Jez Nelson introduces two very different exclusive studio sessions.
The first captures one of Jazz on 3's favourite UK saxophonists, Iain Ballamy, alongside the prodigiously talented Norwegian accordion player Stian Carstensen - a duo which has been captivated audiences across Europe recently.
The second session was originally broadcast on the 10th anniversary of Frank Zappa's death last December, and reunites some of his finest sidemen to perform some classic Zappa material, as well as a few specially written originals.
Frank Zappa didn't like jazz. He once famously said "Jazz is not dead - it just smells funny!" However, much of his music shows a jazz influence, his recorded work features some of the most dazzling improvisers of their time, and he has in turn influenced contemporary jazz.
Recorded in Los Angeles, the reunion includes legendary drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, the Fowler brothers, Walt and Bruce, on brass, bassist Arthur Barrow, and keyboard player Tommy Mars.
