Prom 19 part 1

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Mariss Jansons conducted two of last year's most memorable Proms and he returns with the orchestra he has recently joined as chief conductor for two showcase works of the Romantic repertoire. Dvorak's Eighth is among the sunniest and most beguiling of his symphonies, while Strauss's hero's life is a vast, autobiographical tour-de-force.

Presented by Christopher Cook.

Continues after Twenty Minutes.

Programme notes, composer and artist profiles and 'now playing' information for each main evening Prom are available on LiveText via DAB radio and Freeview.

Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
Mariss Jansons (conductor)

Letters from England

By Karl Capek.

Read by Owen Teale.

For two months in 1924 the Czech writer and playwright Karl Capek travelled throughout England, Scotland and Wales. His witty, appreciative dissections of the 'English' national character and culture quickly established themselves as masterpieces of observation - and classics of modern Czech prose.

Translated by Geoffrey Newsome.
Abridged and produced by Emma Harding.

Jazz on 3

Joe Lovano and Hank Jones

On tonight's Jazz on 3, Jez Nelson presents an evening of laid-back classics recorded just a few weeks ago at the Barbican Hall in London.

Alongside the likes of Branford Marsalis and Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano is lauded as a candidate for the title of best jazz saxophonist in the world. He's certainly the fans' and connoisseurs' favourite, a fact borne out by the warm and enthusiastic reaction he received from the Barbican audience.

For this concert he was joined by a quartet of fine pedigree: Hank Jones on piano, George Mraz on bass and Dennis Mackrel on drums. At 83, Hank is the oldest surviving member of the remarkable Jones brothers jazz family. Trumpeter Thad and drummer Elvin - whose death was announced only a few months ago - are his much-mourned siblings.

The quartet returned to the ever-fertile soil of the jazz standard, celebrated on Lovano's latest album I'm All For You, and they also paid moving tribute to the memory of Elvin Jones, performing music from the drummer's repertoire.

Also in the programme, Jez will be announcing the results of the BBC Jazz Awards, which took place yesterday evening, and playing music from some of the winners.
