The Hours
At sunset today as Christians complete their Vespers, Islam's special day for prayer ends. Hinduism sees evening as a time of ignorance, and the Jewish Sabbath is beginning. We now hear followers of those faiths observing in their regular devotions the cycles of sun and moon and calendar, reflecting also on how their different traditions understand the relationship between worship, faith and and time.

The Hours: Music for the Jewish Sabbath
A short sequence of sacred songs and prayers for the start of Shabbat, performed by the choir of the West London Synagogue directed by Sydney Fixman.

The Hours
Paul Allen and guests discuss the impact of Eastern thought on Western thinking about religion and spirituality.
We have become familiar with the images and many of the rituals of Eastern religion but how seriously have we taken on board their philosophies and ways of living? As satisfaction in the materialistic life and the traditional Western church continues to dwindle, Paul and his guests, including Keith Ward and Martin Palmer, discuss the nation's spiritual direction as we look East for new inspiration.
22:20
The Hours
Fiona Talkington is joined by Verity Sharp in the Lady Chapel for a global selection of devotional music. Their guests include the sufi group The Nizami Brothers from Old Delhi, the devotional singer Alemu Aga from Ethiopia who also plays the beguena a traditional and sacred harp, and, from Senegal in West Africa, the mystic Laye Sow who combines songs of the Muslim brotherhoods with blues guitar. Plus, psalms, lamentations and religious ballads from Welsh group Bragod, Southern Indian devotional songs from UK-based vocalist Manorama Prasad, and organ versets played by Ian Tracey on the cathedral's famous and enormous Father Willis organ.
